Zen Breathing : How an Ancient Breathing exercise can help you Calm?

If you suffer from anxiety or feel stressed out, the zen breathing technique can help you become calmer, and you will easily be able to control your emotions. You will see the benefits of the zen technique in a few minutes. 

Zen breathing technique not only helps with anxiety but also gives you a good night’s sleep and keeps you calm throughout the day. You will experience more energy and improved performance.

Anxiety can hinder your ability to perform your daily tasks. It can also become a vicious cycle that feels impossible to break because the more you feel anxious, the less productive you become. With less productivity comes anxiety for the following day. 

However, you can find much-needed anxiety relief from the zen breathing technique.

I would also like to share my personal experience about how I came across this zen breathing technique.

Failure of the Medical system:

I used to volunteer at a homeless shelter, and there I used to administer Diazepam to people. Diazepam is used to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, and seizures. It takes about 30 minutes to see the effects of the medicine. If someone has panic attacks, 30 minutes is a long time to suffer. 

Not only that, long-term use of Diazepam has a lot of side effects. Long-term use of Diazepam can lead to chemical dependency and, eventually, to severe addiction.

I myself had trouble sleeping at night, which led to cranky days. Sleep is very important for your body, and if you don’t get enough sleep, you become more tired and lose focus in daily tasks. In search of a natural and effective way to treat anxiety and get a good night’s sleep, I came across zen breathing technique.

I am not advising you to stop taking your medication and start breathing zen. But including zen technique in your day-to-day life will help you with anxiety, and you will feel more control over your emotions. You never know, and you might completely be off these medications after following zen technique for longer. 

If you are someone dealing with hypertension or high blood pressure, zen breathing technique will also be very helpful. You will have more control over your racing mind, making you feel more relaxed. Zen technique can calm you within minutes. 

Zen Breathing Technique: lengthening your exhale

Contrary to popular belief, lengthening your inhale doesn’t always effectively calm you down. In fact, your sympathetic nervous system controlling your flight-or-fight response has been linked to taking deep breaths. This means that rather than calming down, you can actually trigger hyperventilation or worsen your anxiety symptoms.
However, your parasympathetic nervous system is closely related to exhaling, and when you take long and thorough exhales, you trigger your body’s calm response.

When you are under stress, try following zen technique:

  • Take a thorough exhale before taking a deep breath. Make sure you push all the air out of your lungs before relaxing and allowing your lungs to inhale naturally.
  • Focus on taking longer exhales than inhales. For instance, if you inhale for four seconds, ensure you exhale for 6 seconds. 
  • Repeat this exercise daily for two to five minutes.
